Designed by AI or designed for people? Why your website needs more than a pretty layout

Website design for people, not just AI – Part 3

An AI website builder can create an impressive-looking page very quickly.

The spacing is tidy. The colours coordinate. There is a large headline, several service boxes and a button inviting visitors to “Get Started.”

But who is supposed to get started? What are they starting? Why should they choose this business? What information do they need before they feel ready?

This is where the difference between generating a website and designing a website becomes important.

A website can look polished while still being confusing, forgettable or ineffective.

Good website design is not only about what appears on the screen. It is about helping real people find information, make decisions and take action.

AI recognises patterns, not customer intent

AI website tools are trained to reproduce common website patterns.

They know that a typical homepage may include:

  • A hero banner
  • A services section
  • An about section
  • Testimonials
  • Frequently asked questions
  • A final call to action

These components are useful. However, simply placing them in the expected order does not create a meaningful customer journey.

The right structure depends on the business.

A plumber providing emergency services may need to display a phone number immediately. A commercial contractor may need to establish capability and experience before inviting an enquiry. A professional adviser may need to explain a complex process and address concerns about confidentiality.

The same layout cannot serve every audience equally well.

People do not visit your website to admire your technology

Your customers are usually trying to answer practical questions:

  • Can this business solve my problem?
  • Do they work with people like me?
  • Can I trust them?
  • What will the process involve?
  • How much might it cost?
  • Where are they located?
  • What should I do next?

A conversion-focused website answers these questions in a logical order.

It reduces uncertainty and gives visitors enough confidence to continue.

An AI-generated layout may include all the expected sections without understanding which questions matter most, where the answers should appear or how much explanation your customers require.

Design should support decisions

The purpose of website design is not to make every section look impressive in isolation.

Design should help visitors:

  • Notice the most important message
  • Understand what the business provides
  • Move between related information
  • Compare suitable options
  • Recognise evidence of credibility
  • Complete an enquiry without confusion

This requires deliberate decisions about page hierarchy, headings, navigation, spacing, content length and calls to action.

Grow My Business creates website strategies around the client’s goals, audience, site structure and customer pathways before beginning the design and build. Its WordPress websites are then developed with a focus on usability, search visibility, simple editing and conversion.

That process cannot be replaced by asking a tool to “make it modern.”

Modern is not a customer journey.

Why AI-generated designs often feel similar

AI tools generate websites using existing patterns and reusable components. This is how they can work so quickly.

The downside is that many generated sites share familiar characteristics:

  • Large, generic headlines
  • Abstract gradient backgrounds
  • Rounded service cards
  • Generic business photographs
  • Predictable section order
  • Vague calls to action
  • Minimal distinction between brands

These features are not automatically bad. Problems arise when they are used without considering whether they suit the business.

A funeral director, adventure tourism company and accounting firm should not communicate in exactly the same way. Their customers have different needs, expectations and emotional states.

Custom design allows the visual experience to reflect those differences.

Conversion starts before the button

Website conversion is sometimes reduced to button colour or placement.

Buttons matter, but conversion begins much earlier.

Before someone clicks “Book a Call,” they may need to understand:

  1. That you provide the service they need
  2. That you work in their location or industry
  3. That you have relevant experience
  4. That your approach suits them
  5. That other people trust you
  6. That contacting you will be straightforward

If the website skips these steps, adding more buttons will not solve the underlying problem.

A strong call to action works because the content before it has prepared the visitor to act.

Content and design need to work together

An AI tool may generate the written content and layout separately, but visitors experience them together.

A designer needs to consider:

  • Which message deserves the most prominence
  • Where supporting evidence should appear
  • How long a section should be
  • When to introduce a testimonial
  • Whether a visual helps explain the content
  • Where a visitor may become uncertain
  • What action is appropriate at each stage

For example, a visitor reading an introductory service overview may not be ready to request a quote. They might first need to view projects, understand the process or read answers to common questions.

A website designed for people gives visitors useful next steps rather than repeatedly shouting “CONTACT US” like an overeager person waving outside a furniture sale.

Easy editing matters after launch

Your website is not finished when it launches.

Services change. Staff join. Projects are completed. New questions arise. Search behaviour evolves. Your business may enter new locations or introduce new offers.

You need a website that can change with you.

AI website platforms can be easy to use while you remain within their original structure. However, businesses may find them restrictive when they need layouts, integrations or functionality that the system was not designed to accommodate.

WordPress gives businesses a flexible content management system that can be expanded as their needs develop. A well-built WordPress site also allows non-technical users to update everyday content such as text, images, links and articles.

At Grow My Business, clients also receive training and access to tutorials, with ongoing support available for more complex improvements.

Does this mean you should avoid AI?

No.

AI can be an excellent tool for:

  • Exploring early ideas
  • Organising information
  • Producing rough content outlines
  • Suggesting frequently asked questions
  • Summarising research
  • Creating alternative headline options
  • Speeding up repetitive tasks

We use AI too. The difference is that its output should be reviewed through the lens of your business and customers.

The right question is not, “Was AI involved?”

The right question is, “Did somebody think carefully about the people using this website?”

Questions to ask before publishing an AI website

Before launching, review your website from a customer’s perspective:

  • Can visitors immediately understand what we do?
  • Is it clear who our services are for?
  • Does the content sound like our business?
  • Have we explained why customers should choose us?
  • Are our claims supported by evidence?
  • Can people find important information quickly?
  • Does each page have a sensible next step?
  • Does the site work properly on mobile?
  • Can our team update it easily?
  • Can the website grow with the business?

When the answer to several of these questions is no, the website may be designed around the limitations of the tool rather than the needs of the customer.

Build for humans first

Your website may be indexed by search engines, analysed by AI systems and assembled using sophisticated technology.

Ultimately, however, it needs to persuade a person.

That person may be busy, cautious, confused or comparing several providers. Your website should make their decision easier.

A custom website combines business strategy, customer understanding, content, visual design and technology. AI can support that process, but it cannot replace the judgment required to bring all those pieces together effectively.

Grow My Business designs and builds easy-to-manage WordPress websites around real businesses, real customer journeys and real growth goals.

Because your customers are people, not prompts.
